How Evolve began
Hi, I’m Jen, as a teenager in school, I struggled with my weight from the age of twelve. On the outside, I was the joker who made fun of myself before anyone else could, but beneath the humour, I was plagued by insecurity and low self-esteem.
I was constantly on some type of diet, from cabbage soup to baby food and shakes. I’d start each week with motivation, but by Friday I would feel so unhappy that I’d binge on junk food, often hiding evidence of my binges. It was a never-ending cycle.
I convinced myself that being ‘big-built’ was just my fate and accepted that I was supposed to be a ‘big girl’.
At twenty-seven, I had my first son and during pregnancy, I gained five stone from overeating. I tried various diets that resulted in cycles of starvation and binge eating. After having my second son I weighed sixteen stone and felt physically and mentally exhausted from being a mum.
I felt the need for change, I was determined to change, and my goal was to put an end to the yo-yo dieting and find happiness in my life.
I committed to losing weight and embracing lifelong changes. Joining a local slimming group was a game-changer, as it allowed me to eat plenty of food and learn about how to cook. I felt full and satisfied and noticed my clothes becoming looser. This new found happiness and confidence also had a positive impact on my kids. I said goodbye to my black wardrobe and embraced a love for shopping, further boosting my confidence.
I loved meeting new people in the group and supporting each other throughout our weight loss journeys. Though I wasn’t fond of the individual being put on the spot and happy clapping, I stayed dedicated to the process and my goals. Some weeks were tougher, but I persevered and reached my goal of losing five stone in a year. The achievement left me feeling fantastic.
My life transformed after reaching my weight loss goal. I switched careers and became a weight loss consultant, helping others achieve their goals. I went through a divorce but eventually met my soulmate, Kev, and my life improved. During my journey, I realised that besides changing my relationship with food and my beliefs about myself, positive self-talk was crucial to make this a lifestyle change. The mindset was key and even more impactful than the food.
I continue to work on this journey and I’m proud of my progress. As a certified Diet & Nutrition Advisor, I’m all about spreading the love and helping others achieve their goals too. Previously I was a consultant for one of the largest weight loss organisations but found their approach too rigid and inflexible. So, I decided to create my own community, Evolve, where I can be my authentic self and give my members the support they deserve.
